Ford’s Customer Retention Second to Hyundai

The 2012 Customer Retention Study was released last week and placed Ford just 4% behind Hyundai for second place in customer retention. Ford came in at 60% customer retention rate, which is up 4% from 2009.

There are many reasons why people decide to change the type of car they drive – it’s old, more space is needed, or they just want an upgrade. Unfortunately, when people change the type of car they drive – many times they will also change brands. 33% of people who switched vehicle brands during their last vehicle purchase said that their previous brand did not offer the type of vehicle that they wanted. Other key reasons contribute to their decision for switching as well, including vehicle cost (both cost of ownership and service), too many problems with the vehicle and lack of resale value.

“Many automotive brands are expanding their array of models in an attempt to capture more buyers, but this isn’t enough in and of itself,” said Raffi Festekjian, director of automotive product research at J.D. Power and Associates. “Manufacturers need to integrate specific attributes and features that delight vehicle owners to maximize their opportunity to both retain customers and conquest from other brands. Manufacturers also need to ensure owners are satisfied with the quality, residual values and ownership costs of their vehicles.”

Over the past few years, Ford has worked to add vehicles to their line-up and even give some badly needed updates to the current line-up. They have moved to the forefront within in-vehicle technology with their Sync system, vehicle park assist, hands free lift gates, Eco Boost and the advanced safety features. These advancements have allowed them to capture and retain a high amount of its customers, especially those in generation Y and X. People are starting to recognize Ford as high quality brand it is becoming, and we can only expect to see the retention rate climb over the next few years.

Ford Sales up in November

So, it is not without great pride that we mention that Ford’s sales are up 20% for November of this year over last, and that total sales have been up 13% for the year overall.  But we think the why of this story is much more interesting than the what.

It is no secret that Ford has seen an impressive rebirth from what could be considered rock bottom for the American auto industry in 2008 and into 2009.  The turnaround has been incredible, considering that Ford was the only one of the big three not to take bailout money from the United States government.  There are a number of structural factors, such as moving toward global platforms, and fewer factories producing more cars, thus creating better profit margins and the list goes on… but who really cares about the details, if Ford is not putting out products that people want to own and drive?

And what’s really interesting, is that in the midst of speculation about its very survival, Ford has taken the lead, and even some calculated risks on many of its offerings. Take Ford’s EcoBoost for example; It would have been one thing to develop the EcoBoost engine with all of its technical innovations, and put it into small cars such as the Fiesta and Focus.  It might have even taken a bit of vision to offer it in the midsize Fusion and Taurus.  But in a full size truck!?  Ford really took a gamble here, and it paid off, big time.  1/3 of new F-150 buyers are opting for the more expensive (initially) EcoBoost in their trucks.

This is important for 2 reasons:
1. It shows that truck owners-traditionally concerned about power, and torque- are willing to invest in a full size truck that breaks from tradition and promises to be more fuel efficient.
2.  The Ford F150 is the second best-selling vehicle of all time.  That means that cutting edge technology, with an eye toward fuel efficiency, and oh by the way, a smaller environmental impact, is no longer a niche market.
In fact Ford’s lineup across the board is 19% more fuel efficient than it was in 2004.  While many auto makers are making progress to keep up with stricter government regulations, none has been on the leading edge more than Ford.

Technology:
Ford has installed more technology across its model lineup than almost any other manufacturer-  certainly at their respective price points.  This technology integrates music, communications, navigation and vehicle functions into a system providing an impressive array of information and capability to the driver, and passengers.  This has also allowed Ford to appeal to a younger buyer.  32% of new Ford buyers stated that the voice activated Ford SYNC technology was an important factor in their decision.
This technology is not only present in the form of electronics and device integration, but also in innovative features like the rear “kick gate” that allows owners of the Ford Edge to approach their vehicle, with their hands full, and open the rear gate by simply moving their foot under the center of the rear bumper.
Ford’s MyKey is another great feature that allows for parents to program a key specifically for young drivers to restrict top speed and stereo volume.

All of this is great, and it is nice to see a company like Ford be so progressive in its approach, but what it really boils down to is making great cars.  And the experts are taking notice as well. The Ford Focus, and Mustang GT both made Car and Driver’s list of “Top 10 Best Cars,” and the F-150, Fusion, and Flex have won numerous accolades as well.

Reliability is up, safety is even better, and all the sudden, it’s cool again to drive a Ford.  But don’t take our word for it, go into a local dealer, and drive one, or even request a Ford the next time you rent a car, and you’ll see what everybody is talking about;-)

–          Global platforms

–          Going green, gas mileage up 19% since 2004

–          Fewer factories producing more vehicles.  Profitibility of fewer units up.

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 1, 2011 – Ford Motor Company’s November U.S. retail sales increased 20 percent versus a year ago. Total sales were 166,865, up 13 percent.

Ford estimates its retail market share has averaged 15 percent in the last three months – its highest retail share in five years.

Ford brand retail sales were higher for most products, with double-digit gains posted by Fiesta, Fusion, Escape, Explorer, F-Series, Econoline and Ranger.

“With gasoline prices continuing to track higher than last year, consumers continue to value fuel economy – no matter what size or kind of vehicle best meets their needs,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Most Ford products deliver best-in-class fuel economy and provide customers an opportunity to choose what best works for them – EcoBoost technology or electrified vehicles.”

Suggested Emergency Supplies to Keep in Your Ford

In this day of cell phones, and AAA, and even car purchase plans that come with a certain amount of road side service, it has become less and less important to be well equipped in case of an emergency.
KNOW THIS: There will be some point where you are out of cell phone range, or it is freezing cold outside, or you simply don’t feel like waiting for someone to come and assist you-maybe all three.  While the most common incidents that will keep you stranded are a flat tire or a dead battery, it might come down to something simple like running over something on the roadway, hitting a pothole, or out of nowhere, your car starts making some ungodly screeching noise.  It would be nice to be able to have the tools available to see underneath the car well enough to know that you just need to merely pull a branch out of the wheel well.  So what exactly should you have in the trunk or in an emergency kit to help you out?

–          First and foremost, you ought to have a way to jack the vehicle up.
9 times out of ten, you can spend $70 to $150 to get a good 2 ton floor jack, that has a handle on it that will lift the car more than a centimeter every 5 minutes, like the factory provided jack that came with your car.
HOWEVER:  If your car is low to the ground or has a very limited area to move a handle around, OR has a small space where you can put the top of the jack against to safely lift the vehicle, you might want to stick with the factory version.  How do you know?
DO A TRIAL RUN!
Understanding in advance that this sounds like ridiculous, preachy overkill, the best way to know how the jack works and how it fits under the vehicle, and/or if it’s even  worth a darn, is to go out some lazy Sunday afternoon (after the game of course) and try to jack the car up.  If you have a truck or SUV, the chances are good that a larger jack will work and you can get one without this little experiment.

–          Murphy’s Law dictates that it will be dark, wet and probably cold when you have a problem:

So, you should have a folded piece of cardboard, perhaps a broken down box, 3-4 feet by 2 feet,in the trunk-this will also serve as a great surface to put your wet gym clothes, or potentially leaky groceries on anyway.  When that big day comes, you will have something to kneel or lay down on, so you don’t have to ruin your Van Huesin slacks or nice skirt.

–          It goes without saying-though we will say it anyway- that you should have a nice bright flashlight.  While the led models give off a bright light, sometimes it can have a strange hue to it that is a bit too directed.  Probably best to have a light on some kind of platform that you can put on the ground and aim, so you don’t have to try to work with a cold steel flashlight in your between your teeth while semi trucks speed by threatening to take your legs off.  Something that, while bright, also throws light over a fairly wide area.  Of course, throw in another set of batteries.

–          A can of fix-a-flat:  This aerosol, silicon goop, or WHATEVER it is can be nothing short of a miracle with many of the flat tires you will experience.  In fact, it’s not a bad idea to have 2 cans.  Invariably, one might not work, or you will have the nozzle half on the tire stem, sending green manna all over the ground, mixing with your tears.  2 cans will make sure that you have enough to get the tire full enough to get to somewhere safe (hopefully home).  No it won’t fix sidewall damage, and won’t help if you have a flat due to a tire stem problem, but it can get you at least a few miles without having to take the tire off.  It can even put a little more air into your spare tire if need be.

–          A couple of universal wrenches or pliers, and one each of a Phillips and standard screwdriver-CHECK.

–          Of course jumper cables: Need we say more?

–          For the “well capitaled” or gadget obsessed:  There are even mini generator/compressor/jumpstart machines available that will get you some air in a tire that is not leaking too severely, jumpstart a dead battery, or even provide some extra juice for your cell phone.  $100 or so is the going rate on these, and we can guarantee that the one time you need it, and you HAVE it, the Benjamin will seem like the best investment you ever made.

–          A grubby pair of shoes, and gloves:  No matter how careful you try to be, most times you crawl out from under a car or truck, looking like you work in a coal mine.  No sense ruining your wingtips trying to find out “what is making that noise!”

So hopefully this provides a practical, reasonable guide for some go-to items to have on hand for that auto doomsday scenario.  Of course you could just sit on the side of the road dialing for dollars ,and sobbing quietly to yourself until someone comes to the rescue, but what kind of a story would that make;-)

Feel Less Stressed With Your Ford This Holiday Season

It goes without saying that the holidays can be very stressful.  Between finding parking, to shop- especially in the city- wrangling with the frenetic masses to find the right sizes, and perfect gifts for those on your list, and then staggering out to the car with you arms full of bags, holding your cappuccino, in the pouring down rain, all while fumbling for your keys… Whew!  And we haven’t even TALKED about cramming all of this stuff back into the vehicle,  with coolers, food and teenagers with headphones on rolling their eyes, heading out and trying to find Uncle Frank’s new place.

Well Ford feels your pain, and has you covered from start to finish.  Ford’s line of critically acclaimed SUVs and crossovers are loaded with handy, smart features, and great technology, to help make the holiday season- and the seasons before and after- as smooth and stress free as possible.  Let’s tackle these challenges one at a time…..

Parking:  Several models are available with Active Park Assist, a system that will help you identify if a space is big enough, and then take the wheel for you, while you control the gas pedal and brake, and move you effortlessly and perfectly into a parallel parking spot.  No more lurching back and forth with cars honking at you, or having your passenger hop out and direct you into a parking sign.  All of Ford’s SUVs and crossovers offer available backup cameras and rear sensors to keep you from backing into a wayward shopping cart or someone tooling around in their rascal.

Loading:  Once you have all of your bags, and packages, it isn’t always convenient to put them down or arrange them to grab the keys.  Well, the Escape has a hands free lift gate that allows you to gently “kick” just under the center of the bumper to open the hatch.  The Edge, Explorer, and Expedition are all available with an automatic lift gate that opens with the touch of a button, and get THIS! The height of the opening can even be adjusted, so you don’t bang the hatch on the sprinkler pipes hanging down in the parking garage, or on your Kayak at home.  Pretty cool.

Getting there:  So you’ve got everything loaded and everybody is happily listening to their iPod, or texting, or even watching a movie playing on the back of the headrests; With built in navigation, you can easily find your uncle’s place and if you pass the wooden sign next to the burn barrel accidentally, you can even call and get directions hands free.  The built in SYNC with MyFord Touch system can even help you find the cheapest fuel for the ride home.

Safety:  In addition to the backup camera, and sensors, each vehicle is available with blind spot sensors, and some even have Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning to keep you from running into the car in front of you while looking for that sign.

Look, the holidays can be tough, and we can’t help you find the perfect sweater, bake a pie with a flakey crust, or even pick the right movie to keep the kids from arguing.  What we can do, is make sure that none of your inconveniences have to do with the car, and that you’ll arrive safely.
Now you just have to hope nobody says anything about Frank’s new girlfriend;-)
